HerStory: KT Bruce

Biography of Kt

KT Bruce started out in her working life as a teacher in Surrey. She remained in teaching until around 2000 when she and her husband moved to Oxford and here she took up photography. In 2007 she took up photography professionally, mostly as a portrait photographer, and she currently has clients in London, Oxford & Gibraltar.

“One of the first jobs I had to do in Oxford…we had a new bishop…and I was asked to do what we call the ‘mop-up photography’ – the ‘reportage’ but my photograph was the one that was on the front page of the nationals …I just captured the bishop leaning down talking to a young chorister..’

She does a lot of work with actors, authors and the church. She has photographed the late Queen and Lord Patten and other well-known people.

She has lived in the Rye area for nine years. Today she also works for the RNLI as a Press Officer at Rye Harbour, for the Discovery Centre, and she helps run the church down in the harbour. She photographs for Rye Town Council, for Rye Church –much of that is voluntary work. However she still has her paid work and feels lucky as many photographers are now struggling to make a living as people feel they no longer need a professional photographer for events.

She is dyslexic and had trouble reading at school but was not diagnosed until she was 40. She feels her dyslexia has helped in some ways as she had to focus on listening and people skills, which has enabled her to be successful in her working life.
