HerStory: Isabel Ryan

Biography of Isabel

Isabel grew up on a very creative household in Rye where at the age of ten and a half her voice was used in a cartoon character in one of her father's TV series for children. While John Ryan's 'Captain Pugwash' stories were becoming increasingly famous on television and in print, Isabel's mother, also an artist, was painting and she became a well known painter in Rye. As a young person Isabel rtemebers sharpening pencils and being involved as a 'production assistant' in the early days of animatioin in her father's studio.

Isabel was living in London as a teenager coming to Rye at weekends and during the holidays to visit her grandparents on Point Hill. She worked at and was sacked from Fletchers, did painting and decorating for her grandparents and subsequently made a career in graphic and exhibition design.

When her parents both died Isabel and her husband and daughter moved back to Rye into Isabel's parents house to archive and manage their legacy. Isabel is always drawing, designing and printing and her creative contributions to the cultural life of Rye are much appreciated by her many friends here.
